Turabian style, and how it differs from Chicago
Turabian is Chicago written for students. Its references follow the Chicago Manual of Style, with a few differences that come from which edition of Chicago it was built on.
What Turabian is
Chicago, for student papers
A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, known by its original author's name, Kate Turabian, adapts the Chicago Manual of Style for students. It adds guidance publishers do not need, such as how to lay out a title page and a thesis.
The current edition follows Chicago 17
The ninth edition of Turabian, published in 2018, is based on the seventeenth edition of Chicago. Chicago itself has since moved to its eighteenth edition, which changed a handful of rules.
Two systems, like Chicago
Turabian offers notes and bibliography, common in history and the humanities, and author-date, common in the sciences. Your instructor will say which one.
Using the Chicago generator for Turabian
Most references come out the same
A journal article or a web page cited in Chicago 18 bibliography form reads the same as it would in Turabian 9, so the Chicago generator on this site is a sound starting point.
Add the city for a book
Chicago 18 dropped the place of publication from book references. Turabian 9 still includes it, so add the city and a colon before the publisher: London: Jonathan Cape.
Authors: ten, not six
Chicago 18 lists up to six authors in a bibliography entry and then cuts to three and et al. Turabian 9, following Chicago 17, lists up to ten, and with more than ten lists the first seven followed by et al.
Laying out the paper
Margins and spacing
Turabian asks for margins of at least one inch, double-spaced text, and a readable 12 point font such as Times New Roman. Block quotations, notes and the bibliography are single-spaced, with a blank line between entries.
The bibliography
Title it Bibliography, or References in author-date. Entries are alphabetical by the first author's surname, with a hanging indent of half an inch.
Questions
Is Turabian the same as Chicago?
Almost. Turabian adapts Chicago for students and follows its references closely. The differences in a reference come mainly from Turabian 9 following Chicago 17, not the current eighteenth edition.
Can I use a Chicago citation generator for Turabian?
Yes, as a starting point. Add the city before the publisher for books, and apply the ten-author rule if a source has many authors.
Does Turabian use footnotes?
In its notes and bibliography system, yes. In its author-date system, it uses parenthetical citations like Chicago author-date.
