IEEE citation generator

Paste a DOI or link and get an IEEE reference, with the fields shown so you can check them.

Your browser asks Crossref and OpenLibrary directly. Nothing you paste is sent to us or stored.

What a IEEE reference looks like

The shape is always the same: who, when, what, where. Once you can see it, you can check any reference a generator gives you, including this one.

Three things IEEE asks for that people get wrong

The number is the citation

IEEE references are numbered in the order they first appear in the text, and the in-text citation is that number in square brackets. The reference list is in citation order, not alphabetical, which catches out anyone coming from APA.

Initials come first

IEEE writes 'M. Aspelmeyer', not 'Aspelmeyer, M.'. The name is never inverted, because the list is not alphabetised.

The DOI has no https

IEEE writes 'doi: 10.1038/nphys1170' rather than a full link, which is the opposite of the APA 7 rule.

Need a different style?

Questions

Why is my reference list not alphabetical?

It should not be. IEEE numbers references in the order they are first cited, and the list follows that order.

How do I cite the same source twice?

Reuse its original number. A source keeps one number for the whole document however often it is cited.

Do I need to abbreviate journal names?

IEEE does abbreviate them in its own publications, following a standard list. Many courses accept the full title; check what yours asks for.

THE ANDROID APP

Keep them, export them, and check your draft

CiteRight for Android writes IEEE and five other styles, keeps your references in projects, exports a bibliography, and checks a draft sentence by sentence for text that overlaps a source.
