Text overlap checker
Paste your draft and up to five sources you used. This student plagiarism self-check highlights wording that stays close to those sources, with each match shown beside its source. The comparison runs in your browser.
Your draft and sources stay in this tab. Nothing is uploaded or stored. Up to five sources; 10,000 draft characters and 12,000 source characters total.
Plagiarism self-check for students: what it can detect
Compare your draft with the sources you actually used, then review close wording, quotation marks and attribution before submission.
Only the sources you paste
This is a source-based self-check, not a web-wide plagiarism scan. It cannot detect a match against a source you did not supply, or replace your institution's originality system.
A percentage is not a verdict
A long quotation you have properly cited will score high, and should. The number is the share of your own words sitting in a sentence that overlaps, which is a prompt to look, not a judgement.
It reads words, not meaning
A paraphrase that keeps the argument but changes every word scores low here. That can be perfectly honest writing, or it can be an idea used without attribution, and no string comparison can tell the two apart. Cite the idea either way.
How to check your writing before submission
Paraphrasing a paragraph
Paste the original on the right and your version on the left. Anything that comes back as identical or very close is a sentence you have rewritten in your head but not on the page.
Checking a section before you submit
Add each source you leaned on, with a title or author so you can identify it in the report. For each match, check whether you quoted and cited it or need to rewrite and attribute it. Also review ideas taken from sources even where the wording does not match.
Quoting deliberately
An exact match is correct when it is inside quotation marks with a citation. The tool shows you where the matches are so you can confirm each one is marked as a quotation.
Questions
Is my draft uploaded anywhere?
No. Both texts are compared inside your browser and neither leaves it. That is also the limit of the tool: it can only compare what you paste in.
What percentage is too high?
There is no such number, and any tool that gives you one is guessing. A piece with three long cited quotations will score higher than one with none and be perfectly honest. Read which sentences were flagged, not the total.
Does it check my work against the internet?
No. It compares your draft against up to five sources you paste. It cannot find sources you have not supplied or check an internet or university database.
Why did it flag a quotation I cited properly?
Because it reads text, not citations. A quotation you have quoted, cited and attributed is still text that matches the source, and the tool showing you that is the tool working. What it is for is finding the passages you thought were paraphrased and are not.
Can I use this instead of my university's check?
No, and it is not a substitute for one. This finds sentences that stay too close to a source you already know you are using, early enough to fix them. Your institution's system answers a different question against a corpus this has no access to.
THE ANDROID APP
The same check, on a whole document
CiteRight for Android runs this over a document rather than a pasted passage, sentence by sentence, and keeps the result beside the references for that project.
